David Wilson – Repeat Sex Offender – Wife stands by Lying Child Molester

The family of an accused child molester is speaking out in his defense.

They talked to Derek Valcourt about the allegations and why they say it’s just not true.

David Wilson’s wife says she didn’t know he already had a prior sex offense conviction until Eyewitness News told her. But she is standing by her man saying she doesn’t believe it’s true.

Candice Wilson fought back tears when talking about her husband. Police arrested David Wilson, 51, after a seven-year-old girl claimed he sexually molested her in the laundry room of a Dundalk apartment complex.

David’s daughter and wife defended him Thursday. Both say they’ve never seen him do anything like this.

But David is a convicted sex offender who spent time in jail more than 15 years ago.

Candice was shocked when she first found out he’d had a prior sex offense and says she has no idea why he never told her about it.

Despite learning of his prior conviction, Candice says she still doesn’t believe the new accusation.

But police do believe it. According to charging documents, David even confessed.

Even though David Wilson is a convicted sex offender, he was able to live just feet away from a Dundalk middle school. That’s because he was convicted in 1992, three years before the sex offender registry in the state of Maryland was even created.

“He may have abused other children. We’d very much like them to come forward, one to see that justice is served, and two they may need counseling,” said Bill Toohey, Baltimore County Police spokesperson.

The news put neighbors like Denise Quintavalle on alert.

“And I talked to my granddaughter to see if he touched her, and she said no,” said Quintavalle.

Meanwhile, his family says they won’t abandon him.

“We still wanna be a family, and we’re never going to get rid of him. If he’s got to move, we’re going to move with him. That’s what families do,” said Tammy Stevens.

Candice says if she finds out the accusations are true, she doesn’t know what she’ll do.

David Wilson is still in jail. He faces third-and fourth-degree sex offense charges.

Police say David used money and candy to lure and entice the seven-year-old girl.

Peggy Edenfield – Agrees to testify against husband

Peggy Edenfield has agreed to testify against her husband and son in exchange for prosecutors not asking that she get the death penalty.

The first of three family members charged with the sexual abuse slaying of 6-year-old Christopher Michael Barrios Jr. could stand trial this year, prosecutors said.

David Edenfield, 59, of Brunswick faces the death penalty if convicted of malice murder in the killing almost two years ago.

District Attorney Stephen Kelley wants to bring Edenfield to trial in late summer or fall. Edenfield’s son, George, a convicted child molester, also faces the death penalty in the slaying. George Edenfield, 33, could face a special civil trial by the end of the year to determine if he is mentally competent to be tried on the criminal charges, Kelley said.

No date has been set for David or George Edenfield. Nor has a trial date been set for Peggy Edenfield, 57, who faces a life sentence in the killing. She is married to David Edenfield and is George Edenfield’s mother.

The five-county Brunswick circuit had 25 homicide cases awaiting trial as of Friday. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty in at least seven of those cases, Kelley said.

None is bigger than those for the accused killers of Christopher Barrios Jr., a case that drew national attention.

The boy was killed March 8, 2007. His body was discovered a week later inside a black plastic trash bag hidden in woods about 2 miles from the Canal Mobile Home Park where he lived.

The three Edenfields were the Barrios family’s neighbors. They remain jailed without bail on malice murder, kidnapping and child molestation charges.

Peggy Edenfield has agreed to testify against her husband and son in exchange for prosecutors not asking that she get the death penalty.

Kelley expects pretrial hearings in David Edenfield’s case to resume within a couple months. It’s been slow going, he said, because of the legal procedures mandated by Georgia’s death penalty law.

“It’s all time-consuming, but it’s part of Georgia’s death penalty process,” he said.

Peggy’s son George Edenfield was a registered sex offender.

Mark Briggs – The Minister with Child porn and a rationalizing wife

Federal law enforcement officers arrested a part-time minister in Beaumont on charges of downloading several images of child pornography.

The arrest was part of ‘Operation Predator’, an effort by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to crack down on internet child pornography.

This week, a federal grand jury in Beaumont indicted Mark Briggs on two counts of child pornography.

Friday morning, Federal Magistrate Keith Giblin held a hearing on the case.

Agents with immigration and customs enforcement arrested the 44 year old Briggs early Friday and escorted him into the federal building in downtown Beaumont.

Briggs is charged with possession of child pornography and downloading child pornography off of a “pay per view” internet website on October 16.

Investigators seized his home computer and when they looked at what was on the hard drive, they said they found five images of child porn.

During the hearing, Briggs’ wife told us he was born and raised in the Beaumont area and is a part time minister at New Temple Christ Holy Church on Pine Street in Beaumont’s north end.

Briggs’ wife showed tears inside the courtroom. During the hearing, her husband pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Joyce Briggs said she’ll stand by him.

“He’s a good father, a good husband and an excellent provider,” Briggs told KFDM News. “He just got caught up in this mess.”

They have a five year old son together.. And each has children from a previous marriage.

The magistrate set Briggs’ bond at $50,000. His final pre-trial hearing will be February 23 in Beaumont federal court.

If convicted of downloading child porn, Briggs could face at least ten years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

If convicted of possessing child porn, his maximum sentence would be ten years and the same fine.

Briggs bonded out of jail Friday.

Scott A. Lippert – Another Sex Offender can’t follow rules

“The law is very, very clear” she said. “This violation of the rules … is very, very serious.”

A 36-year-old convicted sex offender will spend an additional year in jail after he babysat five children July 2, Manitowoc County Circuit Judge Darryl Deets decided today during the man’s sentencing hearing.

Scott A. Lippert of Mishicot will be on probation for seven and a half years, which is the maximum allowed for the felony sex offender working with children charge. He already has spent six months in jail while waiting for the case to be resolved.

“If you violate this probation, I am going to come down on you like a ton of bricks,” Deets warned Lippert in court.

Lippert is to continue with sex offender treatment, maintain full-time employment, follow all sex offender rules and have no contact with children under age 18 unless supervised by a responsible adult with his probation agent’s approval.

“If I didn’t think you could do it, I wouldn’t put you on probation,” Deets said.

A transfer to the Brown County jail for employment reasons was granted.

Two first-degree sexual assault of a child charges were dropped at an Oct. 8 plea date because the state would be unable to prove the charges without the cooperation of an alleged victim and her mother.

Lippert has followed the terms of his extended supervision after he spent a year in prison for molesting a 12-year-old child in Indiana.

With the exception of the sex offender working with children charge, Lippert has remained out of trouble, Deets said.

Assistant District Attorney Jerilyn Dietz requested Deets to sentence Lippert to two and a half years in prison followed by five years of extended supervision.

“The law is very, very clear” she said. “This violation of the rules … is very, very serious.”

Lippert’s attorney Erik Loy asked for probation and 90 days of jail time at the most.

“(He) is well aware now that (babysitting) is not permitted,” Loy said.

Donald Carl Brown – Gets 56 years under Jessica’s Law

Vasquez said the first time he mentioned Brown’s name to one of the girls, she threw up.

Brown pleaded no contest in September to 100 counts of first-degree rape, sodomy, sexual penetration and sexual abuse. Brown admitted in a handwritten letter last March that he abused the girls over a six- to eight-month period in 2007 and 2008.

A Multnomah County Circuit Court judge sentenced a 57-year-old Southeast Portland man to nearly 56 years in prison Monday for repeatedly raping and molesting a girlfriend’s two young daughters.

Donald Carl Brown said he was sorry for what he did before Judge Stephen Bushong sentenced him under Jessica’s Law. The law, passed by Oregon lawmakers in 2006 after a 9-year-old Florida girl was kidnapped, raped and murdered, requires a 25-year minimum sentence for first-degree rape, sodomy or sexual penetration of children younger than 12.

“I don’t know why I did this to them,” Brown said, in what appeared to be a vague denial of what the prosecutor had laid out in his presentation. “If I would have done the things he said I did, I would ask for the death penalty myself.”

Brown pleaded no contest in September to 100 counts of first-degree rape, sodomy, sexual penetration and sexual abuse. Brown admitted in a handwritten letter last March that he abused the girls over a six- to eight-month period in 2007 and 2008.

One week before Portland police learned of the abuse, the girls’ mother discovered it. She and Brown told the girls not to tell anyone, but because the girls were showing extreme distress at school, school counselors interviewed the children and learned what was happening. Deputy District Attorney Nathan Vasquez said the girls were wetting their pants and falling asleep at school because nightmares kept them awake.

The district attorney’s office considered charging the mother for trying to keep the abuse quiet, but decided against it considering that she was the victim of Brown’s violence. Nearly six years of Brown’s sentence is for assaulting the mother.

Vasquez said the first time he mentioned Brown’s name to one of the girls, she threw up.

Brown’s defense attorneys had unsuccessfully asked for an eight-year sentence, saying Jessica’s Law is cruel and unusual punishment and would amount to a life sentence for Brown.
