Joseph Tyson Boy Scout and Big Brother Boy Molester gets life in prison

Evil and horrific is how a federal judge describes what Joe Tyson did. Then Judge Charles Siragusa handed down a sentence to guarantee that Tyson will die in prison.

He was a former Boy Scoutmaster, mentor and Big Brother. Joseph Tyson led Boy Scout Troop 262.

This is how bad this case was. In Federal Court, the judge has to assign points for each charge. There added up to figure out the sentence. Joe Tyson scored a 48. The highest the scale ever goes to is 46.

A former Canandaigua man will spend the rest of his days behind bars, having been sentenced in federal court to a 65 year prison term for having and creating child pornography and using the Internet to lure minors for sex.

Joseph Tyson, 58, formerly of 515 Camelot Apartments in the city, was sentenced in U.S. District Court by Judge Charles Siragusa Friday. He was convicted after a seven-day trial in late 2007 of six criminal charges that also included traveling across state lines with the intention of having sex with a child and taking a child across state lines in hopes of having sex.

Between Sept. 16 and 27, 2005, Tyson used his computer at his apartment in Canandaigua to chat with an individual he believed to be a 14-year-old boy located in Keene, N.H., prosecutors said.

The minor was actually an undercover police officer from Keene. During the chats, prosecutors said, Tyson enticed the minor to engage in illicit sexual activity. “Further, the defendant had mailed the minor a Webcam and condoms,” said Margaret McFarland, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

On Sept. 28, 2005, Tyson drove from Canandaigua to Keene and was arrested. Police said they found a mattress, sex toys, condoms, lubricant and cameras in his vehicle.

On the day of his arrest, his apartment in Canandaigua was searched by city police. His computer was found to contain thousands of images of child pornography, prosecutors said.

Among the media on his computer files were sexually explicit images of a 9-year-old boy from Rochester who Tyson had met through the Compeer big-brother program, McFarland said.

“While acting as the boy’s big brother for approximately 13 months, the defendant repeatedly raped and molested the boy,” she said.

In March 2006, an Ontario County Court judge sentenced Tyson, who had also lived in Webster, to spend 11 1/2 years in state prison for child pornography charges that were levied a month after his arrest in Keene. The charges were related to the computer files found in Canandaigua, authorities said.

He pleaded guilty in January 2006 to first-degree course of sexual conduct against a child and promoting an obscene sexual performance by a child.

The investigation was handled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation along with city police.

Just before the sentence was handed down, Tyson told the judge, “I take responsibility for everything I did. I am sorry for what happened. I am a converted Christian. If I had known then what I know now, this wouldn’t have happened.”

Richard McGuire – Repeat Sex Offender – Pedophile Predator

“inherently dangerous pervert and a scheming predator”

A former Scoutmaster and leader of an after-school activities company on Teesside who groomed and sexually abused a string of young boys was starting a life sentence today.

Richard McGuire, 44, may never be released from prison as he was branded an “inherently dangerous pervert and a scheming predator” of children by Teesside’s top judge.

Imprisoned for public protection today, he must serve a minimum of seven years before he can apply for parole.

McGuire, formerly of Warwick Street, Middlesbrough, admitted a total of 33 charges including attempted rape, sexual assaults, sexual activity with children and taking indecent photographs of children.

He also admitted fraud charges. He obtained contracts for his business to provide out-of-school activities, forging documents not revealing that he had a previous conviction for drugging and indecently assaulting a teenage boy in the 1990s.

He also conned agencies including a school, Middlesbrough Council and the Big Lottery Fund into giving out grants totalling more than £65,000.

Bennie Richardson – Boy Scout Leader – Child Pornography

A judge this morning quadrupled the bail for a Houston man accused of downloading hundreds of illegal videos and photographs of child pornography.

Bennie Richardson was being held in lieu of bail totaling $150,000 on three counts of possession of child pornography, but state District Judge Mike Anderson raised the total to $600,000.

Police said they have learned that Richardson, 37, worked with a Pasadena children’s theater.

“He was a volunteer and helped with children’s workshops,” Assistant District Attorney Eric Devlin said.

Investigators initially believed Richardson was a Boy Scout leader and Sunday school teacher at the time of his arrest on July 25. Although Richardson is an Eagle Scout, Devlin said after today’s brief hearing that the suspect was not a Scout leader.

Jason Volz, spokesman for the Boy Scouts’ Sam Houston Area Council, confirmed today that Richardson has been an Eagle Scout since 1986.

Interviews with Richardson’s neighbors led investigators to believe his Boy Scout troop had disbanded recently, but that he was still active, Devlin said. He said investigators have not determined whether Richardson is affiliated with a church.

His attorney, Randy Martin, said Richardson is neither a Boy Scout leader nor a Sunday school teacher. He also said Richardson did not try to molest children, although he did volunteer briefly with a local children’s theater group.

“He doesn’t even go to church,” Martin said. “And he wasn’t ‘out on the prowl.'”

Martin said Richardson denied ever downloading illegal videos and photos. He said Richardson told him that computers can download information without the owners’ consent.

Investigators, however, said Richardson told them how he searched for child pornography online and that he watched videos, showing children being forced to engage in sexual acts, “to relax.”

Harry “Brett” Taylor Child MOlesting Cub Scout Leader

A Gwinnett County Cub Scout leader has been arrested on child molestation charges.

Authorities took Harry “Brett” Taylor into custody after a boy’s mother went to police and reported that Taylor touched her 8-year-old son inappropriately.

The alleged incident took place during a sleepover with Taylor’s children at a residence in the 1700 block of Bergen Ct in Lawrenceville.

The two children knew each other through Cub Scouts where the suspect was their Cub Scout leader.

Authorities said the victim stated that sometime during the night, Taylor touched his genital area. The victim also stated that the suspect had photographed him while he was drying off and undressing after exiting their swimming pool.

During the investigation, authorities said they learned that the Taylor had been molesting another family member for over an extended period of time.

Gwinnett police said they are investigating two more complaints filed since the initial report of alleged misconduct.

Authorities said Taylor has been on Gwinnett County’s library board since January 2006.

“This is why we’re asking if anybody has been in contact with Mr. Taylor or their children have been in contact, to please speak with their children and see if there’s any inappropriate touching or contact with Mr. Taylor…and if so, to contact our investigators,” said Cpl. David Schiralli with the Gwinnett County Police Department.

Gwinnett County library board members said Taylor is still a member of the board as of Monday evening.

Authorities said Taylor is charged with four counts of child molestation and one count of sexual battery.

He is currently being held without bond at the Gwinnett County Detention Center.
