Robert Feldscher – Repeat Sex Offender – Third Strike

Previous Convictions

  • LEWD OR LASCIVIOUS ACTS WITH CHILD UNDER 14 YEARS
  • POSSESS/ETC OBSCENE MATTER OF MINOR IN SEXUAL ACT

A compact disc left inside a laptop and tossed into some bushes led San Jose police detective Sean Pierce to a fugitive sex offender and a mobile home miles away stuffed with hundreds of suspected pornographic video clips and images of girls ranging from teenagers to toddlers.

Robert Feldscher, 48, a convicted child molester facing his third strike, was charged this week with two felony counts of possession of child pornography and violating his sex-registration requirements. He was arraigned Tuesday and is being held without bail. He could face life in prison if convicted.

Feldscher’s roommate, Stephen Ledoux, 52, is expected to be arraigned today on similar child pornography charges. Ledoux was being held in lieu of $20,000 bail.

“Looking at child porn is just a gateway,” Pierce said. “Eventually, they will take the next step. It’s just like drug users.”

Child pornography cases are difficult to uncover, experts say. Purveyors often share illegal images with each other on peer-to-peer Web sites. Such transactions are harder for law enforcement to infiltrate and track.

“We are trying hard, but we are behind the curve,” said Mike Fletcher, who heads the sex crimes unit of the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office. “The technology is changing so quickly, a perv can sit around 24 hours a day and send it all over the world.”

This case began when the owner of a used-car business went to open a gate at the end of his driveway and saw a laptop discarded in some shrubbery, according to Pierce.

He had lent it, records said, to his new mechanic Feldscher, who told him he was proficient at using computers and would post cars for sale on various Web sites.

Feldscher, who had already been let go, admitted he had tossed the computer away because he saw a helicopter overhead and thought police were going to arrest him.

Not computer-savvy, but street-savvy enough to be highly suspicious, the man gave the computer to his son.

His son called him up soon afterward. This computer has some bad stuff in it, his son told him. Besides downloaded child pornography, a DVD of child pornography was still in the drive.

Pierce and the police department’s Megan’s Law team tracked Feldscher to Ledoux’s mobile home in San Jose.

Using a search warrant, they found hundreds of CDs and DVDs and thumb drives containing such titles as “Tara – 8 years old.”

Police also forwarded a sample of their evidence to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children in Virginia. The center runs images of seized child pornography through a database to see whether they match any known victims.

More than 1,500 children have been identified through the program, according to the center’s John Sheehan.

Pierce is asking anyone who suspects that their children had any contact with either of the men in the San Jose case to call him at (408) 277-4290.
