A 39-year-old Reidsville man convicted of attempted second-degree rape in 1996 faces new charges of first-degree rape and trespassing, the Rockingham County sheriff’s office said today.

Joseph Cantrell Jr., of 119 Justin Drive, had been held in the Rockingham County jail under a $250,000 bond, according to the sheriff’s office. But after a first-appearance hearing, a judge doubled the bond amount to $500,000.

According to the sheriff’s office, a high school student was at home Monday when Cantrell came to visit her family.

He asked if she wanted to see his dog. She agreed, and went with him to his house. Afterward, he forcibly had sexual intercourse with her despite her resistance, the sheriff’s office said.

Cantrell told her not tell anyone, according to the sheriff’s office. But the next day, she reported the incident to school officials.

In 1996, Cantrell was convicted in Guilford County of attempted second-degree rape and misdemeanor breaking and entering, according to the N.C. Department of Correction. He was sentenced to prison and released in 2004.
