Dustin Powers – Repeat Sex Offender had second chance and blew it

Richland County Common Pleas Judge James Henson believed in September that Dustin Powers, a 36-year-old school teacher, deserved a second chance. So, despite the fact Powers had been convicted of sexual battery for having sex with a 13-year-old girl, Henson placed him on probation for five years.

Powers got a second chance, all right — to continue victimizing the girl. This week he was back in Henson’s court, after being caught having sex with the girl, now 15, again. This time, Henson sentenced Powers to four years in prison.

Henson maintains, given what he knew at the time, his initial decision to place Powers on probation was correct. We disagree. A school teacher caught having sex with a child should be sent to prison — period.

Paul C. Stamp – Child Molester sentenced

A 20-year-old Medina man will spend the next two and a half years in state prison for molesting a child.

Paul C. Stamp, Hellert Road, Medina, was originally charged with first-degree sexual abuse, endangering the welfare of a child and nine counts of possessing a sexual performance by a child, according to the district attorney’s office. He was arraigned in Orleans County Court Aug. 27 and held at the jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.

He pled guilty to possession of a sexual performance by a child and attempted first-degree sexual abuse of a 6-year-old female victim Oct. 22. The incident occurred sometime between December 2006 and February 2007 at his former place of residence, Stamp said.

At the time of Stamp’s plea, Judge James Punch reduced bail to $5,000 as requested by Stamp’s attorney, Nathan Pace, based on his extensive admission early on in the case. Bail was never posted, however, and Stamp stood in his black-and-gray striped jail suit while his sentence was announced Monday afternoon.

“As much as I would like to put you on probation, at this point I think it would be irresponsible,” Punch said.

In addition to the prison sentence, Stamp was sentenced to three years of post-release supervision. He will pay a series of fines and surcharges and be forced to register as a sex offender.

“I hope you take seriously the programs offered in the state prison system,” Punch said.

Matthew D. Jardine – Repeat Sex Offender

A Price man, who was already a registered sex offender, is facing some serious federal prison time after being charged with trying to meet a child over the Internet for sex.

Matthew D. Jardine, 32, was charged Monday in U.S. District Court with one count of enticement for sexual activity. According to charging documents Jardine carried on a series of chats with someone he thought was a 13-year-old girl from Dec. 3, 2007 to Jan 11, 2008. In reality, the person he was chatting with was an undercover officer with the FBI. During the course of their chats, Jardine reportedly talked to the officer about sexual activity.

Eventually a meeting was set up in Price in which Jardine was arrested when he showed up. After his arrest, Jardine told police he only intended to talk with the 13-year-old and did not plan to have sex with her.

Records indicated that Jardine is a registered sex offender who had a prior arrest involving enticing a minor over the Internet.

If convicted, he faces a mandatory five years up to 30 years in prison.

Ernest Lavern Bolin – Repeat Sex Offender hides in bathroom

Lexington deputies arrested a 46-year-old man they say is a sex offender who failed to register after a second offense.

Investigators arrested 46-year-old Ernest Lavern Bolin, who does not have an address, at about 1:10 Sunday afternoon.

Officers arrested Bolin at motel on Augusta Road near West Columbia on an arrest warrant for second-offense failure to register as a convicted sex offender.

Bolin was being held on Tuesday at the Lexington County jail on a $10,000 bond.

Under South Carolina law, Bolin was required to register with the Sheriff’s Department as a convicted sex offender, because deputies say he has lived at various locations in Lexington County.

Bolin was convicted on September 23, 1991 of kidnapping, Sheriff James Metts said. Bolin also was convicted on November 7, 2001 of a first offense of failure to register as a convicted sex offender, according to the sheriff.

Investigators obtained an arrest warrant for Bolin on October 22, 2007 after Bolin failed to register as a convicted sex offender with the Sheriff’s Department, Metts said.

On a tip, investigators went to the motel where they say Bolin was hiding, to find him hiding in a bathroom at a room at the motel.

Investigators arrested Bolin without incident at the motel, Metts said.

Deputies say Bolin provided officers with a fake name when he was asked to identify himself.
