WANTED: Sexual Predator in North Hills

NORTH HILLS — Police are searching for a predator in North Hills before he strikes again.

The latest attack was captured on surveillance video. It shows the man scoping out an apartment complex playground.

When the security guard leaves, the suspect grabs a four-year-old girl. The girl screamed and tried to get away.

A little boy who saw the whole thing started screaming too. The man then got spooked, let the girl go and walked away.

Police say the brazen suspect is involved in at least four other attacks in the neighborhood.

“There was plenty of light in that complex, very visible, didn’t try to hide himself or conceal himself in any manner,” said LAPD Commander George Villegas.

The suspect is described as in his early 30s, 5’5″ tall, 140 to 180 pounds, with a scar on his left cheek.

Anyone with information is asked to call the LAPD at (818) 838- 9810 or (877) LAW-FULL.

Joseph M. Mateyko – Repeat Sex Offender

Hamilton Superior Court 1 Judge Steven Nation wrestled with whether to accept a plea agreement from a man already convicted once before for child molesting.

Thursday Joseph M. Mateyko, 44, of Sheridan went before the judge to ask that he accept the agreement, which will put him back on the street, and not in prison – where Nation would have liked to send him.

Mateyko pleaded guilty Oct. 11 to one count of sexual misconduct with a minor, a Class C felony. The charges stem from incidents that occurred in July and August of 2004, in which he admitted having sex with a 14-year-old girl whom he had hired to clean his house.

After hearing both the victim and Hamilton County Prosecutor Sonia Leerkamp ask him to accept the plea, Nation relented and sentenced Mateyko to six years, with credit for 1,038 days already served in jail and the balance served on probation.

“I have a real passion for child molesting cases, and my heart goes out to these victims,” Leerkamp told the judge. “This has been a really difficult process for her. She was damaged by what Mr. Mateyko did to her.”

But she added putting the victim through a jury trial would pile even more stress on her than she was already experiencing.

The victim told Nation she was concerned because Mateyko had recently moved and is living within a block of her home in Sheridan.

Mateyko’s ex-wife also petitioned the judge, saying there were more victims in this case than just the young girl.

“We have two children together – an 11- and 9-year old,” she said. “They’ve had to deal with a lot of this. They’ve been teased at school. I’ve had to move them from school.”

Nation looked directly at Mateyko and let loose with his opinion, feeling his hands were somewhat tied by the light sentence.

“You have prior acts of violence … prior molestations,” Nation said. “Why should I believe you would obey probation?”

Mateyko said he has two children and did not want to cause any more harm.

“I was a victim myself. I hate what’s happened here,” he said. “My sexuality was used against me at 10 years old … when I was molested.”

Nation did not buy the excuse.

“And you’ve turned around and caused more victims,” he told Mateyko.

“You target young ladies. “Sir, you’re a selfish predator.”

In addition to registering as a sex offender, Mateyko must undergo court-ordered treatment programs. Nation also gave him two weeks to move from his residence and away from the victim.

It’s not the first time Mateyko has been sentenced for having sex with underage victims. Leerkamp successfully prosecuted him in May 1991 for three counts of child molestation during a jury trial.

Steven L. Arnett – Reoffended less than 24 hours after release from prison

Multiple crimes as a juvenile and a busy criminal history as an adult led to a 30-year prison sentence for a Fort Wayne child molester.

Steven L. Arnett, 23, had been out of prison less than 24 hours before he had sexual intercourse with a then-12-year-old girl in June. When police arrested him a short time later, Arnett was found with cocaine in his possession.

In November, he pleaded guilty in Allen Superior Court to a single charge of child molesting. As part of a plea agreement, his sentence was to be capped at 30 years.

During a sentencing hearing Thursday, Arnett said he took full responsibility for his actions, and his attorney lobbied for a sentence less than 30 years.

But Allen Superior Court Judge Fran Gull gave him the maximum called for by the agreement.

“I’m not sure what else the system is supposed to do for you,” she said. “At the tender age of 23, you have a worse criminal history than most older adults I see.”

Bruce A. Sitton – Registered Sex Offender – Burglar

Police in Corvallis say that between August 25th, 2007 and October 23rd, 2007, seven local residents were victims of residential burglary.

In each burglary, the victims were home during the commission of the crime and each time the suspect entered through unlocked doors and windows.

Members of the Corvallis Police Department, Benton County Sheriff’s Office Street Crimes Unit, investigated the crimes and linked them all to one man, Bruce A. Sitton, who is a registered sex-offender.

Lieutenant Tim Brewer with Corvallis Police says Sitton was arrested on December 14th by SCU detectives. A search warrant was served at his Albany home earlier this month, and evidence linking him to the Corvallis burglaries was discovered.

Sitton was previously convicted in Polk County in 2000 and Benton County in 2001, for a series of burglaries in which he attempted to sexually assault some of his victims. He served five years in prison and was released in 2006. He has been on post-prison supervision since his release.

During the seven Corvallis burglaries Sitton stands accused of, occupied residences and bedrooms were entered. In some cases, the victims were touched in a sexual manner.

None of the victims were physically injured. Several items of clothing and other personal property were stolen during in the burglaries and later recovered inside Sitton’s home. Sitton, an Albany resident, is currently lodged in the Linn County Jail.

Jenny Lynn Davis – Repeat Sex Offender

A convicted sex offender made no comment Friday as an Anderson County sheriff’s investigator testified that the woman performed sex acts on a deaf child.

Jenny Lynn Davis, 29, is charged with the obscene exposure of her private parts in a lewd manner, committing a lewd act and criminal sexual conduct with a minor.

But Ms. Davis was not a registered sex offender at the time of the alleged criminal acts that led to her return her to jail recently.

Her name was added to the sex registry in 2005 after she was sentenced to prison in 2004 for committing a lewd act with a minor, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division records show.

Anderson County Magistrate Mike Smith ordered a case against her to be sent to a grand jury after determining Friday that probable cause exists that she committed a similar crime with the deaf child prior to her being sent to prison.

Anderson County Sheriff’s Investigator Gary Hayden testified that he became aware of the incident in August after officials with the South Carolina School for the Deaf and the Blind in Spartanburg became suspicious of a youth who performed a sex act on a school bus and was acting out with other boys.

Mr. Hayden testified that the now 17-year-old student from Anderson County had been molested between January 2002 and November 2003.

Ms. Davis is accused of seducing the boy in a shower at his home near Easley, Mr. Hayden said.

Ms. Davis of 55 Scott St. in Laurens was arrested Nov. 30. She was in custody at the Anderson County Detention Center as of Friday night in lieu of a $51,000 property bond.
