Suicidal molester sentenced

While he is serving a two-year prison sentence, a convicted child molester who hurled himself off the third floor of the Allen County Courthouse will receive psychiatric care.

Cicero Offerle, 30, told Allen Superior Judge Fran Gull during a sentencing hearing Friday that he would try again to take his own life.

Gull sentenced Offerle to two years in prison and two years of probation, but ordered that while he is in the Indiana Department of Correction he undergo psychiatric treatment.

Offerle wheeled himself into Gull’s courtroom, still recovering from injuries he suffered after he jumped over the third-floor railing of the Courthouse minutes after a jury convicted him of child molesting in early November.

He had been accused of touching a then-10-year-old girl inappropriately in October 2006.

After his conviction, Gull ordered Offerle taken into custody because he had tried to kill himself during the course of the child molesting investigation. Moments later, a handcuffed Offerle broke free from a bailiff and jumped. He suffered head, leg and other injuries.

Speaking in an almost-inaudible voice Friday, Offerle told Gull he would try to kill himself again.
