Child molester sentenced to 40 years in prison

Monico Gonzales of Leander was sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated sexual assault of a child

Gonzales, 34, was convicted and sentenced by Judge Ken Anderson.

In July 2007, a 12-year old Leander girl told her mother that Gonzales had been forcing her to perform oral sex on him. Leander police investigated, and Gonzales eventually confessed to police that he had been sexually abusing the child for several months.

Gonzales also admitted to police that he had been giving rides to school to a middle school girl in the neighborhood. Police have not been able to identify that child in order to investigate the case further. “We are hoping that anyone with information about this unknown child will come forward,” said District Attorney John Bradley. “Any other child harmed by this criminal should no longer be afraid and can be kept safe through the Children’s Advocacy Center.”

Anyone with information about Monico Gonzales can call Det. A.J. Keirn with the Leander Police Department. Gonzales is not eligible for parole for at least 20 years.

Meadville man is declared sexual predator

A local man who attempted to lure three girls into his van in Meadville on three separate occasions was declared a sexually violent predator under the state’s Megan’s Law on Friday.

The ruling followed a 50-minute hearing before Crawford County Court of Common Pleas Judge Anthony Vardaro.

Joseph Leone, 26, of Meadville, pleaded guilty to three counts of attempt to lure children into a motor vehicle, one count of terroristic threats and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

He faces up to 12 years in prison and $25,000 in fines when he is sentenced next Friday. As a sexually violent predator, he will be required to register his whereabouts with police for the rest of his life once he is released from prison.

Sexually violent predator guidelines are part of the state’s Megan Law and requires an assessment by a state board to determine whether the offender meets specific criteria.

Molly Marie Wagner, a licensed clinic social worker and member of the state sex offender assessment board, presented testimony that in her opinion Leone met that criteria.

Although assessments are usually done after personal interviews with defendants, Leone “enacted his Fifth Amendment rights” and declined to be interviewed, said Wagner.

She reviewed Leone’s history, combined with characteristics indicating a disorder. She also reviewed police and probation office reports in making her determination.

Leone pleaded guilty to attempting to lure: a 16-year-old into his vehicle on Sept. 6, 2006, on North Street; a 12-year-old girl into his van on Nov. 6, 2006, on North Street; and a 15-year-old into his van on Jan. 7, 2007, on North Main Street south of Allegheny College.

All of the girls ran away and weren’t harmed.

Wagner testified the cases were similar in that they all involved adolescent females who were strangers to Leone. She said there was an element of violence in the fact that when police searched his van it had the middle seat removed, rope with a slip knot, latex gloves and tape.

That was indicative that Leone would try to quickly tie up the victims, she said.

She also testified of other incidents in Erie County involving a woman whom he offered a ride to work and then attempted to assault. Leone also failed to complete required counseling and treatment.

Anderson judge increases bond to $180,000 for accused Internet predator

A West Columbia man was told Friday that his $150,000 bond is to increase by an additional $30,000 after an Anderson City Police officer obtained two warrants, accusing him of distributing obscene material to a minor.

Randall Williams, spokesman for the city police, said 36-year-old Leroy Everette York transmitted images over the Internet of himself performing a sex act.

Friday in Anderson Municipal Court, Anderson City Police Officer Christine Cauthen told Judge Welborn that Mr. York made “web-cam transmissions to what he believed was a 13-year-old.”

During an initial appearance on Thursday, Judge Hugh Welborn ordered Mr. York held under the $150,000 bond after three warrants accused him of using the Internet in making a criminal solicitation of a minor from the city of Anderson.

Friday, additional warrants accused Mr. York of the distribution of obscene material to a person under the age of 18, resulting in the additional bond of $30,000.

Mr. York, now facing an $180,000 property bond, solicited sex on November 4 in an Internet chat room from an undercover officer, according to the incident report.

Mr. York was arrested at his home on Tuesday and is being held in the Anderson City Jail.

Officer Cauthen indicated on Thursday that Mr. York is also wanted by authorities in Greenville, Spartanburg, Mauldin and at the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Sex offender arrested on indecent exposure charge

A registered sex offender from Cecil County faces criminal charges after Maryland State Police say he exposed himself four times to a 7-year-old girl in Kent County on the Eastern Shore — once just after she got off a school bus.

Leslie Edwards Phenneger III, 43, of Rising Sun, was arrested yesterday and charged with four counts of indecent exposure and is being held on $35,000 bail at the Kent County Detention Center, state police said. He is currently on probation for a prior sex crime, police said.

Police said the latest investigation began Nov. 30 when a trooper was called to Foreston and Burditt roads in Chestertown for a report that a man was sitting in his car and had exposed himself to a girl who had just gotten off a school bus. Police said the girl ran away when the man tried to talk to her, and the man was not found.

On Dec. 5, police got another call from the same area to say the man had returned. Police responded and arrested Phenneger, they said. Authorities said they searched the man’s Rising Sun home and confiscated a computer that contained child pornography.

Police said the suspect was driving a teal, 1997 GMC pick-up with Maryland registration 52T741. Detectives said there may be more victims, and urge anyone who has seen this truck or had contact with the man to call the Maryland State Police, Centreville Barracks, at 410-758-1101.

Woman charged over child porn, bestiality haul

Police say a 39-year-old woman has been charged after they found child pornography and photos and videos of bestiality in a raid on her inner Sydney home last night.

Officers say the woman was arrested at her Surry Hills house about 6:00pm (AEDT) after they received a tip-off that she was allegedly publishing child pornography on the internet.

Police say they seized numerous pornographic images and videos, along with ecstasy, amphetamines and LSD.

They say they also took several computer items, including CDs and DVDs, for further examination.

The woman was taken to Surry Hills Police Station for questioning before being charged with child pornography and drug dealing offences.

She was refused bail and will appear at Central Local Court later today.

The investigation continues.
