Probation violation lands sex offender in prison

Robert T. Shelton of Highland Park is trading probation for prison.

The 30-year-old pleaded guilty Monday in Lake County Circuit Court to violating requirements of probation.

Shelton was convicted in October 2004 of sexually abusing a young teenage girl and was sentenced to 24 months of probation, six months of work release, 150 hours of public service work and ordered to undergo sex-offender treatment. The sentence also banned him from committing new offenses.

His new guilty plea followed two incidents, one for violent and harassing phone calls, and another for battery. On Sept. 23, 2006, he telephoned a woman and threatened to kill her and her family. Last July in Arlington Heights, he struck a woman in the chest with his elbow.

Judge John Phillips accepted the recommended plea and sentence, revoked Shelton’s probation and ordered him to prison for three years. Shelton will get credit for 180 days already served in the Lake County Jail, and will be able to earn day-for-day good conduct credit in the Department of Corrections.

Phillips allowed Shelton to delay remand until Jan. 9, but will not allow him to leave Illinois.
